Ibrahim Behemino

Leading the call for peace

He would drive a trisikad tirelessly each morning for the
most part of his young life, saving every penny he earned
for the day. When he finally has enough to give his parents,
he would rush to the community learning center where his
teacher and fellow learners are, listening to the lectures and occasionally taking notes and talking with his seatmates.

It was a typical day for Ibrahim Behemino, 22. He never thought of himself as a youth leader, or anything more than an ordinary boy who stayed out of school youth for six years. He was in second year of highschool when his father lost his job, and he devoted the little he earned everyday for his own tuition and his family’s everyday expenses.

With all the difficulties and confusion in his adolescent years, he joined a gang in his community playing pranks and causing trouble around the neighborhood for years. “I wanted to have friends, to be known and feared in our community,” ibrahim recalled. “I thought it was the cool thing to do.” His gang would beat up innocent passers by at night and do other petty crimes.

When a friend of his told him about ELSA’s Alternative Learning System program for out of school youth, he decided to join immediately. “But that was because I heard they were giving away free school materials,” he admitted sheepishly. “I thought of joining so I can get the giveaways.” To this day, he says never once thought that the program would be the catalysts that would forever change his perspective in life.

In the course of the program, they were taught life skills, Islamic values, and peace lessons. One day, he found himself struck in the lesson on resolving conflict. “Those made me realize that it was wrong to hurt other people just to become known. It changed the way I think and act,” he said.

But his search for peace has just begun. He worked even harder and became more persistent learner, visiting his teacher even at night just to ask if he passed the test given that day.

As he neared the completion of the ALS program, he became a staunch peace advocate, gaining more confedence and becoming more outspoken. He was then invited to be part of the Young Advocates for Peace Camp organized by the Kids for Peace Foundation. “I learned in the camp that no matter what religion, tribe, or culture one is from- Tausug, Yakan, Muslim, Christian, Lumads, IP’s- everyone is seeking harmony and freedom from war,” he said.

Since then, Ibrahim’s idea of cool has changed from gangs to engaging out of school youth in promoting peace. “Sometimes, people do not listen to out of school youth, thinking that we are unproductive and cause of chaos,” he said. “I want to change that. The youth should be proactively involved in promoting peace.” Together with the other Young Advocates for Peace, he initiated a PEACE LANTERN MAKING and a VOTERS EDUCATION seminar for the young people in the neighboring areas of Cotabato City.

Today, Ibrahim continues to promoting peace in Mindanao, while leading more activities for the youth. His search for peace continues, transforming him into the very person he never dreamed he could be.
